Reported memory and actually used memory do not match and blender will use all memory regardless of the scene if given enough time to render (Aka leaking memory) when using cycles GPU rendering on M1 mac. #100112

Sample of Blender.txt

Screen Shot 2022-08-01 at 2.14.14 AM (2).png

System Information
Operating system: MacOS 12.5
Graphics card:

Blender Version
Broken: (example: 2.80, edbf15d3c0, master, 2018-11-28, as found on the splash screen)
Worked: (newest version of Blender that worked as expected)

Short description of error
The issue seems to not exist when using CPU rendering.

For example, I rendered a simple test scene with few textures and few objects.

The Statics shown report a memory use of "mem 456.88M, Peak 1928.17M" (see attached screenshot)

However, sampling the processes reveals that the memory usage is actually growing out of control and reaching closer to 100GB. (see attached "Sample of Blender.txt")

Because the issue is only when using GPU rendering, because the issue happens regardless of the complexity of the scene or textures used, and because Blender seems unaware of the extra memory usage (Not reporting it in the displayed statistics) I believe this is actually a bug and not a limitation of the system.

Seems to be the same as #100061. Can you try to confirm that by testing on 3.0 and checking if it works?

I am happy to try that, but I can't find download links for 3.0... just 2.93.10 or 3.2.2, 3.3.0 and 3.4.0 on https://builder.blender.org/download/daily/ so I am not sure where to obtain the requested 3.0 version from.

You can download that from here:

Thank you.

I downloaded 3.0 and I tried it but I was unable to actually test cycles GPU rendering on M1 mac on 3.0, it appears to use CPU rendering regardless of what I set.

Looking further into it, 3.0 finds no GPU render device to use and you can't install a graphics card on an M1 Mac.

Reviewing the patch notes this seems to fit since Metal GPU looks to have been introduced in 3.1 https://wiki.blender.org/wiki/Reference/Release_Notes/3.1/Cycles

I will note that this issue is happening while rendering just a single image and I am unsure if the problem develops over multiple frames as in #100061. I am also not getting blank frames. I don't know if this is simply another way the issue is appearing or if it is a separate issue.

Okay, then this seems to be a different issue indeed.
Sorry for wasting your time on 3.0, the other report mentioned it so I assumed Metal was introduced then.

@andresmi can you provide sample .blend file? Without file we can't reproduce the issue.

Also please check if this issue exists in latest alpha build from https://builder.blender.org/download/daily/
