Regression: Dropping a file in VSE does not create the strip at the cursor position as it did before #100300

System Information
Operating system: Arch Linux
File explorer: Thunar 4.16.11
Desktop: Xfce

Blender Version
Broken: 3.2.2
Worked: 3.1.0

Caused by 77794b1a7b
In 3.4, issue has been fixed by b010985e4a (drag &drop at cursor position)

Short description
In the older versions of Blender, dropping a file in VSE placed the strip to the cursor position and to a new channel. This still works when adding the strip through the menu Add->Movie, Sound, Image... It also works when dragged from the internal explorer. It does not work when dropping the file directly from the external file explorer. It's pretty inconvenient when the strip appears at the beginning of a long sequence and one has to drag it all the way to the right place. Seems like it's only added to the first channel always.

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error

  1. Open VSE
  2. Open your system file explorer
  3. Move a cursor somewhere in the timeline and drop a multimedia file - the new strip is not placed at the cursor

The attached video shows the difference.:

Try in 3.4 Alpha. Here is seems to place the clips at mouse point when dragged from OS(Windows) folder. And dragging into preview, the clip will be inserted at playhead.

Try in 3.4 Alpha. Here is seems to place the clips at mouse point when dragged from OS(Windows) folder.

This is changed in {b010985e4ac49a98e12802567efdf6b38f7b5bf2}
but it's not pushed to 3.3 branch. So issue still remains in 3.3 beta version.

Pratik Borhade changed title from Dropping a file in VSE does not create the strip at the cursor position as it did before to Regression: Dropping a file in VSE does not create the strip at the cursor position as it did before 2022-08-10 03:07:35 +02:00

The fix has been pushed to the 3.3 release branch.
Feel free to reopen if the issue persists.

Note that the functionality has changed.
So if you drag into the timeline, it will drop the strip at the mouse cursor position.
If you want something like the old way where it is inserted at the playhead, drop it in the preview section instead of the timeline.
