System Information
Operating system: macOS-12.5-x86_64-i386-64bit 64 Bits
Graphics card: AMD Radeon Pro 5700 XT OpenGL Engine ATI Technologies Inc. 4.1 ATI-4.8.101

Blender Version

  • macOS intel<<--
Broken: version: 3.4.0 Alpha, branch: master, commit date: 2022-08-16 13:10, hash: 8af983ba78

Short description of error
I try to render Suzanne with Adaptive Subdivision 3 enabled in cycles GPU mode and the 'Loading render Kernels' process isn't ending after almost 20 min. (What usually takes at the most 3 min.)
When applying the Subdivision it renders straight away without the need of the 'Loading render Kernels' process.
Screen Shot 2022-08-17 at 1.51.33 am.jpg
I also tried it with this seting on/off with no difference.
Screen Shot 2022-08-17 at 2.22.32 am.jpg

This isn't an issue with the 3dviewport. I can see and work with this adaptive subdivisions, but when I hit render it will stuck in the 'Loading render Kernels' process.

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error
Here the blendfile to test. Just open and render via GPU as set.

Could you let it load for as much as it wants and see if it eventually finishes?

That's what I did, and the machines CPU was going between 100 and 1500% + Temp. 97˚C.
But twice for 20 min. at this load... To be honest I'm not willing to melt the machine.
Before doing this, a look into the code would be less destructive.

Have you tried the blend file I provided? If so, what happened on your side?
I guess you have better ways to monitor why and what is happening.
And if you try this on an Intel or M1...

I am not on MacOS myself, so I will leave this to someone else. But I guess we can just wait for the initial investigation on #100102.

This is just running out of memory as far as I can tell, and which may not crash but rather cause swapping slowing down the entire system.

This is a render at high resolution with 0.25x dicing scale. That's subdividing to more than 16 polygons per pixel. Normally dicing scaling should not be set smaller than 1. The viewport is different because it's lower resolution, the mesh only takes up a small part of the screen, and dicing scale is 1.

Furthermore adaptive subdivision is an experimental feature and not officially supported in the bug tracker.
