System Information
Operating system: Windows/Linux
Graphics card:

Blender Version
Broken: 3.2.0 e05e1e3691

Short description of error
Devanagari (the alphabet of the Hindi language) gets displayed wrongly. As a text object it displays करिष्यामि with the Font "Mangal" as this:

Screenshot_20220823_131454.png

Notice the difference in the upper part of the letters.
I'm aware that this might as well be an issue with the font. I checked the font with two font viewers one of which displayed it like blender does, the other one displayed it correctly.

I've also been told that the display of hindi in the UI is not without issues, although that might be a different issue:

I am reporting this on behalf of another user and can only relay questions to them, not answer any about hindi language myself. I've attached a blend file and the font they sent me below.

@Harlekin - Notice the difference in the upper part of the letters

This is a known issue with Blender in that we don't do any complex text layout (or "shaping"), but instead just show the inputted text without alteration. Your web browser correctly shows the text "करिष्यामि" because it is properly shaping it (swapping some glyphs for others, creating conjuncts, moving diacritics, etc).

This has been a "to do" item for many years and is something I am currently working on, but have no timeline for completion. D15687: WIP: Bidirectional Text and Complex Shaping

Thanks for the quick response. I'm glad to know its a known issue. Is there any data we can provide to support your efforts?

No, not yet. It is fairly straightforward, but involves a lot of code changes. Note that my primary focus is for display in the UI, with shaping for 3D text objects probably done last. As of Blender 3.4 Alpha we are now shipping with the NotoSansDevanagari font in anticipation of this. But don’t expect fast progress, but a timeline of months to a year perhaps.

Here's that same text sample if we do text shaping:

{F13415257,width=100%}
