System Information
Operating system: Windows-10-10.0.19044-SP0 64 Bits
Graphics card: Quadro RTX 3000/PCIe/SSE2 NVIDIA Corporation 4.5.0 NVIDIA 512.36

Blender Version
Broken: version: 3.2.2, branch: master, commit date: 2022-08-02 18:15, hash: bcfdb14560
Worked: Not sure if it worked before, but it is broken in 3.3rc as well

Short description of error
Bake Action - Pose (selected bones only or that setting unchecked) fails with "Nothing to Bake" if the armature node isn't selected, even if you are in pose mode for an armature.
image.png

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error
I single-click select a bone it also selects the Armature and bake works, but if I press A to select all, or drag select a set of bones it selects only the bones, not the armature then when you try to bake animation you get a warning "Nothing to Bake".

Reproduce:

  • Add a new Armature with a single bone

  • Shift-click it to deselect it, while keeping it as the active object

  • Enter pose mode

  • run Bake Action (menu or search ) and set it to pose mode. Uncheck selected bones only

  • Bake- fails.

  • Hit A to select all

  • Bake- fails

  • Click on the bone in the viewport or select the armature in the outliner

  • Bake- works

I cannot reproduce this with either the latest stable or current development versions of Blender.

Am I doing something wrong?

Yes, you still had the armature selected in the outliner, not sure why the box select didn't deselect the armature in your example except that you never picked the bone to start with maybe? then did a deselect.

The point of the bug isn't only how you select things though, the point of the bug is if the armature isn't selected then it doesn't bake.

I made a quick demo video of the problem.

Note the Armature object is selected when you single-click select a bone, but is NOT selected when you Box Select the bone. As described if the Armature is not selected you get a "Nothing to Bake" error when baking.

I made a quick demo video of the problem. [bone_select_bake_bug.mp4](https://archive.blender.org/developer/F13470637/bone_select_bake_bug.mp4) Note the *Armature* object is selected when you **single-click select** a bone, but is NOT selected when you **Box Select** the bone. As described if the *Armature* is not selected you get a *"Nothing to Bake"* error when baking.

Please next time attach an example blend file. Especially when a specific selection state is important to get right, and even more especially when a triager has already had trouble reproducing the issue. A clearly written description + example blend file is much easier & faster to work with than having to watch a video.
