HD RESOLUTION X264: Crash Blender #19741

%%%Summary: x264 variants of high resolution, including AVCHD samples, crash Blender. High resolution AVCHD grinds Blender to a halt.

Frequency: Always (5 tries for 5 manifestations)

Reproduction: (1) Establish a Sequencer view. (2) Load attached standard x264 1920x1080 motion picture file. (3) Scroll Sequencer timeline such that it touched the new strip. Blender should crash.

Additional Information: This has been tested with and without audio, so it does not appear to be related to the audio subsystem. It has also been tested with lower resolution sequences, that appear to be fine. Highest resolution that appears to not induce the crash within Blender is 1280x720, and in fact, they work fine.

Makes sense except the file formats play in every known media player on Linux - some with ffmpeg backends. Strongly suspect this is a scaling issue in Blender.%%%

%%%Yep, though you can clearly see : at extern/ffmpeg/libswscale/yuv2rgb_template.c:478

...meaning it's coming from blender's ffmpeg library :) Perhaps its due to an old version or custom tweaks in the version in our source. Assigning this to Peter.%%%

Additional Information: It seems that without the image preview window open, moving over the movie does not crash Blender. As soon as you attempt to change a Sequencer view to preview or scope, it will crash Blender.%%%

%%%Sadly, even with the new use of system level ffmpeg, we still have this crash.

It would be lovely to get this resolved as it allows for HD and greater grade animated textures etc. - rather important in today's day and age.%%%

%%%the crash is within the color conversion code. (That might explain, why media players don't crash here, since they don't have to convert to RGBA).

Since ffmpeg was removed from blender svn today, I'd suggest using a recent ffmpeg-build
from git.ffmpeg.org, since the bug seems to have been fixed upstream.

(at least, the version from 2009-08-11 doesn't crash here)

Closing this now. Please reopen, if I got that wrong.

Cheers,
Peter%%%

%%%I will confirm this.

You should be able to fix 2.4x lineage by doing the following:

  1. SVN ffmpeg checkout.

  2. Configure with --prefix to configure to a NON SYSTEM LIBRARY path. It will cause havoc and pain. For example, set it to --prefix=/home/you/Sources/ffmpeg-library

  3. Compile and do a make install (no sudo necessary for a path in your home directory obviously)

  4. Set user-config.py to that path above for the ffmpeg related library position.

  5. scons.

In theory, your HD related woes go away thanks to Peter's upstream patch.%%%
