adding a solidify modifier to cloth produces spike artefact #20562

%%%The attached animation blend file shows a long spike artefact (at least 95% of runs it is long) for one frame or so.
When the solidify modifier is deleted the spike goes away.
Readding the (default) solidify modifier makes it reappear.
The spike shows up in the viewport and when rendered.

Also attached a png for a quick look at the spike.%%%

%%%Hi, I had the same issue, I think this bug can be limited by increasing the resolution. Here is an graphical explanation:

%%%this is caused by the 'Even Thickness' option which works well when you give it geometry like a building or something with fixed edge angles.
In this case the cloth is folding over to almost 180d which causes spikes when trying to maintain even wall thickness.
To do this correctly it would need to have a 'Cap Ends' option which would make the modifier significantly slower (like boolean), so I dont think its worthwhile at the moment.

Disable 'Even Thickness' and you probably wont notice the higher quality normals too. This gives better, faster results for cloth.

It might be worth making even thickness default to off.%%%
