Network render results unusable #25034

%%%Tests performed with Cog's SVN33437 on a three machine system. all XP Pro 32 bit and Win 7 32 bit.

In 'Network Settings/Jobs' there is a button 'Download render results from Network'. This seems to be the only way of getting the render result from the cluster unless you have had the client window open while the blend was rendering and press get animation (not very practical).

In 'Network Settings/Jobs', selecting a job from the jobs list and pressing 'Download render results from Network' downloads a load of .exr files which appear black in photoshop if you have left the client window open during rendering. If you have closed the client and open Blender, switch to Network render, select Client and refresh the jobs list, select a job and press 'Download render results from Network', you get the same, though on some occasions I have only got a single black .exr file called output, which is black. I have not been able to isolate when this happens.

I have seen this mentioned in the forums and people seem to be keeping the client open and using 'get animation', but surely the 'Download render results from Network' button is suppose to do something more useful, otherwise how do I get my precious renders files back?%%%

%%%It could be a bug, but you certainly should verify exr files with Blender itself, photoshop is not something we can support.

Martin: two people in irc had this issue too (troubled, t2hot), but didn't give me sufficient information about the exrs. It was mentioned that you fixed the thumbnails, which caused exrs to be black?%%%

%%%I can confirm that the .exr files are black in blender 255 svn33437 sequencer as well. I have attached one. It should be of a cube.

Many thanks%%%

%%%The file is fine, it's a MultiLayer image, not supported by sequencer.
Load files in the Image window to see them. Compositor also supports MultiLayer.

If you want a format readable for Sequencer, choose regular exr or png or jpg etc.%%%

%%%Hi Ton
So the problem is that even if you have PNG selected in the blend to be rendered, if you use the 'Download render results from Network', they will always come back as layered .exr files. You only get them as PNGs when you press 'get animation' button.

Using the compositor to is quite slow to put these .exr files together (I could use network render!:). is there any chance the 'Download render results from Network' button could download the format you selected?

In anycase I will put this info in the relavent thread for other confused renderers. Many thanks.%%%

%%%The "render result" is in Blender what you see on F12, it shows all layers, passes etc. That can be saved completely to MultiLayer files, and read back similar to 'render results' for processing on blender side.%%%
