Boolean operation erases vertex groups #33548

%%%When applying a boolean modifier, all vertex groups of the modified object are cleared. The groups themselves still exist, but no vertex is contained in them.

I have attached a simple example. It has two objects, PolySphere and Cube.

  1. PolySphere has a Boolean modifier, taking the Union with object Cube.
  2. Go into edit mode on PolySphere, you can see the two vertex groups Lower and Upper and select/deselect the corresponding vertices.
  3. Go back to object mode, and apply the Boolean modifier
  4. Go into edit mode on PolySphere, and try to select vertices from any of the vertex groups.
  5. Notice that no vertices are selected.

%%%I have found a workaround: create a material for each vertex group, and make sure that the material assignment matches. After applying the modifier you can use the material select/deselect buttons in edit mode to select the vertices again. You can use this to recreate the vertex groups.%%%

Booleans don't support vertex groups, they do support face-corner data like UV's and VCol's though.

There's any news about it? Is really sad that we can't have vertex groups preserved with boolean operations when we have almost everything else (vcol, materials, uv, seams... )

News are -- we've added edge custom data interpolation, meaning creases, sharp edges and so are now preserved by the boolean modifier. But vertex groups are bit more tricky to preserve -- it need to do some remapping of vertex groups from right operand to the left one and so. This is still considered a TODO.
