Hey guys,

I have just installed Windows8 and am having some serious issues with the viewport redrawing and Blender responding very slowly/erratically.
Everything lags very badly and Blender doesn't respond to the mouse pointer in menus very well and seems to not be refreshing the viewport correctly when the window is maximized.
The menu lag is basically a second of so behind the mouse pointer and clicking any menu is really hard and unresponsive.
I am also getting viewport corruption when the window is maximized, which is fixed when an area is clicked (the 3d view is corrupted but fixed when clicked, the outliner is corrupted but fixed when clicked etc.).
I have tried all the various draw methods in the users prefs with no improvement.

Also Blender doesn't automatically create the Blender Foundation folder under AppData/Roaming unless you manually save a startup file.
Everything worked fine with the exact same setup in Windows 7.

I have attached my system info for the 2.65a release, along with r54262

Cheers!

%%%I can't tell you other than that your opengl installation messed up... a GTX 560 should just work perfectly for Blender.

How and where Blender does installation stuff for windows8 I have no clue. None of our active developers has moved to windows8 yet... maybe Thomas has a clue?%%%

%%%Hi Ton, Thomas,

Sorry about the delay...I missed the notification emails and just logged in to check the progress of the report.

In regards to the auto folder creation, I'm not really sure what I can add to the report other than Windows 8 uses the same paths as windows 7 as far as I can tell.
If I manually save a start up file the Blender foundation folder appears in the expected place (AppData/Roaming) but it is still not created automatically when you start Blender.

I have had some progress in regards to the drivers though. I removed the 313.96 drivers drivers from my system and then performed a clean install of the 310.90 drivers and everything seems to be working ok in that regard now, though I did have to do this 3 or 4 times times to get it to work correctly. I should say that I always do clean insalls when upgrading my drivers.
I seems that Windows 8 has some sort of UAC issue where it wont install drivers correctly (I have full admin rights), so I'm not sure if it that the 313.96 are bad or that Windows 8 just wouldn't install them correctly and I got lucky with the 310.90 drivers.

As I mentioned before, the only variable is Windows 8 as the setup used worked perfectly with Windows 7.

Again, sorry for the delay.

Cheers,

  • Andy

%%%The 313.96 driver is a beta version, probably it has some issue or something went wrong in the installation? I tried installing them on Windows 7 and they seem to work fine some maybe it is the latter.

Regarding the auto folder creation, I'm not sure how this is a bug exactly. Blender creates this folder when it needs to save a file there, like the startup.blend or recently opened files list, not immediately when it starts up. I wonder how you would even notice this, do you need it to be there for some reason or is there some operation in Blender that fails because of it? When I tried Blender on Windows 8 I didn't notice anything wrong in particular, saving user preferences, remembering recent files, etc. all worked ok.%%%

%%%I had a very similar redraw issue when Blender was using tripple buffering, but OpenGL could not allocate the tripple buffer and used double buffering instead. In that case the first drawing always fails, because it is not updated correctly. But since i had a message on the console that the allocation failed, i would assume that blender does not react to this error accordingly by switching to something else then tripple buffering. %%%

%%%@brecht,
Yea, the 313.96 drivers worked perfectly in windows 7 and it just looks like the 313.96 drivers just don't play well with Blender. I just tried them again and got the same issue,

Regarding the folder creation, Blender threw up an error in the console about it. Not much help I know but I forgot to write it down :(.
I will try to see if I can reproduce it.

In Windows 7 doesn't Blender create the folder automatically when it starts up if the folder isn't present? Maybe it is my memory failing but I thought that it did.

Cheers,

  • Andy%%%

%%%Andrew, please press CTRL+U to save a startup blend file and check the console for errors and post that here.

%%%Hi Thomas,

There are no errors in the console any more...I have no idea what was going on. The folder still isn't created once Blender starts up, but maybe this isn't a bug (as Brecht said previously)

The 313.96 drivers are still bad for Blender though it seems.

I'm going to see if some friends with Windows 7 get the same folder issue as I was having and will post back reports.

Cheers,

  • Andy%%%

%%%Hi,

I´m having the same issues with the 313.96 and the new 314.07 driver under Windows 8 64 with my 650ti graphics adapter.
The interface is very laggy. This happens with 2.64, 2.65a and the RC of 2.66.
Reverting the driver back to 310.90 solves the problem.

Greets, Phil%%%

%%%I don't think we have Blender issues here, this seems like a regular support topic.
For strange behaviour of windows8 you can much better try forums like www.blenderartists.org, you will find many more windows8 there.

For a bug report we need redoable evidence something in blender is wrong... if you can find such, post it here then we check. For as now I consider the issue closed though.
Thanks!%%%
