%%%--- Blender version with error, and version that worked ---
2.64.2
Create a new blend file.
Create a material and a texture.
Set the texture type to image, click [+ New], create some generated image (UV grid for example).
Use Texture Paint to paint on that image.
Save the blender file.
Open the blender file again.
The image reverts to a clean UV grid, the painted-on image is lost.
Blender doesn't let to paint on that image.%%%
Changed status to: 'Open'
%%%Thanks for the report, but this is not a bug. Generated images doesn't store anything in .blend apart from settings they were created with. You need to save file on disk (optionally, you could pack it into .blend then) to be able to store painting result.%%%
Changed status from 'Open' to: 'Archived'
%%%This is a grave usability bug, I just lost a good texture to it. When I save a blender model I expect that when I load it again it'll be in the same condition I saved it in. There should be a special type of image to paint on that's saved with the blender file or better, ditch Generated image completely and have an own texture type for UV grid.%%%
%%%Well, this is kind of depends.. But i agree better feedback of whats going on (like whats being saved, and what's not) shall be improved here. Made it a TODO for 2.67.%%%
%%%There are two problems here:
a) blender should not let you paint unless it will save the strokes...
b) blender should not let you quit/load without the "prompt on quit" dialog, unless all data is saved, packed or not
c) it is confusing to figure out how to get a generated image into a paintable state.. for example:
now... do the same steps above, but choose "blank" in step 1... magically the strokes save in step 6.. why? there is no reason for the difference in behavior.

%%%sorry, step 3 should say:
