%%%--- Windows 7 32 bit, NVidia Geforce GTX550 Ti ---

- Blender 2.67 r57131, Appended item from November 2010 blendfile cannot remember version.

- Appending an object from a prior version of Blender loads but cannot be edited. TAB has no effect although other object manipulation is possible. ---

- The attached blendfile has the appended item. Press TAB to see that you cannot enter edit mode. While this may be a problem between versions I have successfully appended objects, mesh and grouped items from the previous version before. ---

%%%Could only see linked objects from /i/BLENDER-tmp/2.54/fly-engine-motor.blend (which is missing btw).
And you're indeed not allowed for linked objects.

Currently could not see any bug here at all. Just make sure you're indeed appending objects, not linking them. If the issue will happen with appended object, please report back exact steps of reproducing the issue.

Thanks for the report, but there're no bugs in provided files, everything works as it supposed to.

P.S. Some tips:

  • Linked objects are highlighted with blue-ish outline, not orange. This will indicate whether your object is indeed linked or not.
  • It is possible to make linked objects local by L-key menu.%%%

%%%Hi Sergey,
Have tried this again and can confirm that although I am just appending, and not linking, the object will not allow TAB to edit the mesh. However, using the L key menu I can make it local and editable. Seems like append is being treated as though it is linked when it is not. The appended object appears with an orange outline so this should confirm it was appended. Also Link is not checked when appending. I have attached the original file and the Object name is Sphere. By the way proper naming of objects happened much later indeed I am currently at version 221 of this project. Don't you just love it when you try to restart a long abandoned piece of work after too long and absence.

%%%Hi Sergey

After thinking about my problem I revisited the original blendfile, fly-head-40.blend, and realized that the sphere object was not editable in this blendfile either. The object was linked in that file. So if you append from a linked object from the original file it remains linked but shows as appended. It may well be that flags describing the linked status of objects has changed since that older version of Blender. Either that or there is an issue with how blender recognizes linked or appended objects.
Hope those thoughts help.
