System Information
Windows 7 x64 8GB
nVidia 460 GTX

Blender Version
Broken: blender-2.69-fd0b104-win64
Worked: (2.66)

Short description of error
Since the release of 2.69 Blender crashes on my Windows system and OSX when I press F12. I thought this such an obvious bug that others would report it but it seems to persist so I'll go ahead and file this report.

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error
I pulled the above mentioned version down from buildbot today and unzipped it into my downloads folder. I double clicked on blender.exe and waited for it to come up. I click to dismiss the splash screen and press F12. It worked, the render of the default cube did not crash Blender! I thought yeah they have fixed the bug.

I proceed to move the above blender folder to my more permanent storage location for Blender and right-click on the EXE to send it to the desktop as a shortcut. I alter the shortcut to append the -con command line parameter so I can have both the console and Blender launched at the same time when I use Blender.

I conduct the same test using the shortcut icon. I launch Blender.exe using the shortcut and click to dismiss the splash screen then press F12. Blender crashes.

To sum it up.
If I launch blender by pasting the below path into the Start/Run box of Windows 7, then press F12, Blender does not crash.
C:\Users\Admin\Downloads\blender-2.69-fd0b104-win64\blender-2.69-fd0b104-win64\blender.exe

However,
If I paste the below code into the Start/Run box of Windows 7, then press F12, Blender DOES crash.
"E:\Documents and Settings\Admin\My Documents\Blender\26_Builds\blender-2.69-5611fb6-win64\blender.exe" -con

There is something wrong with pathing in this release of Blender that causes it to crash on render. Either the inclusion of spaces within a path, or path length, or launching from a shortcut...IDK

I tried to redo this but couldn't. I have only a C: drive and no build from revision 5611fb6, so I could only try to launch from
"C:\Documents and Settings\Admin\My Documents\Blender\26_Builds\blender-2.69-fd0b104-win64\blender.exe" -con

Can any other Windows developer redo this? Is it the E: drive, the spaces in the path, the length of the path, the -con option, the older build revision, .. ?

iirc, 5611fb6 is rather problematic… might be worth trying with a more recent build?

Ah yes, there was the render crash with boost paths. I'll assume this issue has been solved in newer version.

If there's a bug in newer versions I can reopen the report, but we need you to figure out which difference between the two commands causes the crash.
