Draggable popups #39244

Propose to allow popups to be dragable.

Motivation:
The F6 popup for example may obscure the viewport, some python scripts also use dialog box style popups (cell fracture for example), and this can get in the way of the view too.

The fluid-designer customized blender also looks like it would be nice if the popups could be dragged (though this isnt the main reason to look into this).

Solution:
Add the same corner drag icon to (some) popups thats already used for panels (diagonal corner widget).

open to other solutions, but this seems reasonable & consistent.

Pros:

  • Makes Blenders UI more flexible, especially for larger dialogs
    Cons:
  • We need room to add some handle, adds more buttons and users need to be able to see this clearly across different layouts. (not always simple)
  • Possible conflicts and bugs with other areas of menu code (more work for us to support)

Design TODO's:

  • define a convention for dragging popups (corner drag icon?)
  • choose which constraints should be applied, eg, should this be limited to the current area? or just to the window?
  • choose which kinds of popups should be draggable.

Now I would also like if somehow you get that menu without pressing F6. Why?

  1. F6 is quite out of the reach
  2. Many new users don't find it, thinking that the tools lacks advanced options. If you don't know about F6 currently it seems there is no other way to get those options. I know before tabs you had a region showing them but now can't find that
  3. Yes handles will be nice for all tools when possible. Maybe make something like maya has, with small floating boxes for each main option. Just an idea.

This is Great! I implemented these changes into the Fluid Designer Build, and everything appears to be working great. I don't see any reason why this can't be included in the master. Since the window is drag able from any empty part of the popup dialog i don't see any reason to include an icon like the drag able panels. I like that the panels can overlap other spaces, and i haven't ran into any issues yet. If there is specific functionality that i should test then let me know, but i think this is great. Thanks Campbell!

@AndrewPeel - I think we should probably have a drag widget, mainly because its kindof confusing if you accidentally click on the area between 2 buttons and drag, that the whole region moves.

We could just make the top areas draggable like a (title bar) but this is a bit hidden too.

@ideasman42 - I like the idea of having the title bar draggable. It is a bit hidden, but this is a very common functionality that exists across most applications and Operating Systems.

@ideasman42 very nice! This works really well, and like @AndrewPeel mentioned, being able to drag over other regions is good.

Personally I like being able to click+drag anywhere on the popup, but having a specified drag area/handle is quite reasonable. If you do this then I'd personally prefer to see an header added to the popup so that it's more clear what it is. I think it's quite commonly understand that you can click and drag on headers for moving them, just like any OS level window.
