Display percentage ignored in Cycles viewport with dupli-object particles #39286

Closed
opened 2014-03-20 18:21:56 +01:00 by Allan · 14 comments

System Information
WinXP 32bit, ATI HD 4550

Blender Version
Broken: Blender 2.70 19e627c
Worked: Blender 2.69 r60995

Short description of error
All particles are drawn in Cycles viewport renders, even if display percentage is set lower. Only seems to affect dupli-object and dupli-group particle types. Hair is working as intended.

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error

  1. Add a sphere to the default scene so you have a cube and a sphere.
  2. Add a particle system to the cube.
  3. Change the emission end frame to 1.
  4. Select 'object' as particle render type and choose the sphere as the dupli-object.
  5. Turn on cycles viewport render.
  6. Drag the display percentage slider all the way to 0.
  7. Notice all particles are still drawn.

Sorry cannot attach a .blend as I cannot drag/drop (bare xvnc server). If there is another way I will upload.

Mmmh… The number of particles does not change in rendered viewport when you change display percentage, indeed, and this was working in 2.69. But iirc there were some changes in this area, so not sure this is a bug or a known limitation™ of current code.

PS: to upload a file, you can also chose "Upload File" in Action field of new comment. :)

Ahh, thanks for the upload tip.

I had the file made anyway so here it is for easy viewing.

Confirmed : I noticed the exact same behaviour. I don't think it is purposely so, because it only affects objects and groups particles, not hair.

I made a little video showing the problem and some other stuff:

I've also noticed that while this issue occurs with both the particles setting Hair and Emitter, changing the seed number in the Hair settings correctly updates the particles distribution in both the solid and the rendered viewport, while still rendering 100% of them, but if you change the seed number in Emitter mode the particles are redistributed in solid view mode but don't get updated in rendered view.

Now, if you go back to solid view, change the seed value and then switch again to rendered view the particles are still keeping the same initial distribution, whatever the seed value was the first time you switched from object to rendered view mode. To update the rendered viewport you have to change some parameter value like, by example, the number of emitted particles.

For your information, I tested this issue with the current official 2.71 Win64bit version of Blender (Hash: 9337574) and I noticed the following behaviour. Please, find attached a test file with both Emitter and Hair particles cases in two scenes, one with Blender Internal and the other one with Cycles. Note that changing the display percentage on the emitter cubes is displayed correctly in realtime in both Solid and Rendered Views for Cycles while for Blender Internal only the Hair case works as expected. The Emitter case in BI works in Rendered view mode only when you have the display percentage at 0% and then you raise it up, but not the contrary.

The original issue was solved already in 83f2012300.

The problem noted by @Harvester is a separate bug ...

D613 should solve the second issue eventually. Closing this report since the original bug is already fixed.
