UVproject modfier seems broken #39501

I've tried to use this modifier and read the Blender docs concerning this, but have some issues with it.

"aspect" and "scale" as well as "override image" don't seem to work in any way.

UVprojectbug.blend (https://www.dropbox.com/s/q4erv8djf0me5g4/UVprojectbug.blend).

Override image does do something at certain times, but never shows the image you choose

could still be my fault, however,I'm not sure.

AFAIK I think it's you, but to your defense it is confusing as hell.

Take your file as you uploaded it.
The image you see is the image you've got assigned to the material: you are in GLSL mode(shading panel of the N shelf in the 3D viewport).
Switching to edit mode will not bring the eye, though this one is the one you see in the image editor.
For that to happen, you'd better choose Multitexture, or use the solid view in your viewport, together with the textured Soldi option (Shading panel of the toolshelf)

Now, if you want to see "kitty_tail" projected, chosse it in the modifier, and then you MUST be in solid mode, not texture mode !
Select the Textured Solid (shading panel, N shelf) view, and check override image.

I agree, the whole thing is confusing as hell…

thnx for the explanation

this should be solved ,or have added information for in the tooltip

Also seems like I can't get it to render with an overridden image.

how about scale and aspect options though? I still can't see any change for that.

to me it seems these options should be examined and the way it works or is shown should change,or otherwise the options should just be removed as they don't work properly. UV project works great otherwise.

I can only recommend you to have a look at how the example file in the Wiki works.
I am no master of this modifier though, and i must admit that it is quite confusing, but I don't see any hint of a bug so far.

Maybe some more experienced user could explain how to use it so that you get to do what you want, but that is rather done in the support section of blenderartists.org.

If you think you have uncovered a bug, can you be more specific on how and when it occurs ?

The wiki has nothing that mentions what you explained, and I did say I already tried the wiki.

Other then that I see no change even with multitexture or otherwise when using "scale" or "aspect".

if they don't work in any way that does seem like a bug to me as it doesn't work, period.
So far I have no confirmation that scale and aspect DO work for you.

If they do work for you,or anyone else, then this bugreport can be closed, but in that case it would be nice to have an explanation so the wiki can be amended.

Have you tried using your main camera as projector ?
AFAIK, these settings only have an influence when a camera is used as a projector.

I have to admit that this modifier leaves me a strange tortuous taste in the mouth… Like "black magic".
I don't feel confident enough to change the wiki though…

EDIT: After some more testing it really semmes to my that only cameras used as Projectors are affected by the scale and aspect values, so i took the liberty to mention it in the Wiki.

Yes, UV Project modifier is not an easy-to-understand tool… And our doc often lacks of quality, this is a known issue, but not a bug. :)

As said @gwentiv, scale/aspect only really make sense with projectors which are able to use something else than an orthographic projection (hence, perspective cameras)…

Anyway, no bug here, in such dubious case it’s usually better to first ask on user forums like blenderartists.org, there you'll find some experts able to say you whether it’s actually a bug, or just mis-comprehension of the tool. ;)

thnx for the answers.

@mont29: i do ask around usually before posting a bug,I just rarely get a good answer. Even on IRC.
