System Information
Windows 7 x64 - custom-built i7

Blender Version
Broken: 271
Worked: 2.70a

Short description of error
Load any m2v (select MPEG2 blu-ray in Premiere Pro CS5's Export dialog). The error message reported in Texture properties > Image > Source will be:
"Can't load image."

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error
In Blender Render:

  • add an object (plane will do),
  • unwrap,
  • add a material,
  • add a texture to the material,
  • change the texture to Image or Movie,

The video file seems to be corrupted, it doesn't contain any valid bitrate or duration. For some reason it worked in older FFmpeg, but it doesn't work in new one. We can't deal with this from a blender side.

Workaround could be generating timecodes, but they're not really supported by textures.

Thanks for the report, but it's just issue in FFmpeg upstream. You might poke them. Workaround could be to re-compress the file externally.

Very odd. The exact same video file loads fine into 2.70a... unless it got corrupted in transit to the bug board.

2.70a uses FFmpeg 1.0 (which is REALLY old) 2.71 switched to FFmpeg 2.1.4.

Ah, sorry. even worse. Windows 2.70 used FFmpeg 0.7, which is even older :S It was total mess with FFmpeg versions across the platforms that days. Now it's all 2.1.4.

Interesting. FFmpeg 2.1.4 (apparently) still supports MPEG2, but for whatever reason it doesn't work in Blender, or maybe it doesn't work at all.

Not a shop-stopper, but an annoyance since I spent all day yesterday producing MPEG2 videos for reference use within Blender. (sigh)

I know; it's not the Blender dev guys. Sorry. Just had to vent.

It's not about having a support, it's about being able to read corrupted files. For some reason your video file does not contain information which is needed to properly real the file.

You might fire a report in the FFmpeg tracker about duration/bitrate not being read from the file.
