Grease Pencil Convert Gives Nothing #40879

System Information
Windows 7, 64 bit, Quadro 4000

Blender Version
Broken: (example: 2.69.7 4b206af, see splash screen)
Worked: (optional)

Short description of error
Unable to convert grease pencil to curve, gives object with no data.

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error

  1. Default scene, delete everything or move all objects into different layer. Then back to layer 1, deselect everything.
  2. Draw Grease Pencil.
  3. Convert to Curve, it will give back this object without data.

I supposed the reason is that GP needs to be attached to Camera or Object. Maybe for users without this knowledge, we need to prevent them to convert or draw GP without any object attached or linked to it. Or another option is to be able to convert the GP even if it is not linked.

Are you sure the object has no data? Testing this in current master (i.e. post 2.71, 8d6f546), a curve does get created with points. The only issue here that may be confusing things is that the curve created exactly in line with the grease pencil lines, which are still visible.

EDIT:
Please include a file demonstrating this issue, and/or try using a newer version of Blender. The build you've got is already getting old.

Ok, my mistake. It's probably not a bug.

I often do this nowdays:

  1. New Blender scene.
  2. Select All objects, move to layer 2.
  3. Deselect
  4. Start drawing with Grease Pencil.
  5. Convert to Curve.
  6. Nothing. I thought there is nothing. I checked in the outliner, there is GP Curve created, but I cannot see it in 3D view.

I realized this as you pointed out, the Curve is actually there, but it is attached to the hidden objects in different layer.

Maybe this is just a slight UI thing that users needs to understand themselves.

Or maybe: when GP is converted into Curve, it should be created at the Current Active Layer, instead of attached and placed inside the hidden layer?

Just a note.

Thanks.

In fact, there is always an active object and grease pencil is linked to it.

If you add an intermediate state :
Deselect
add an object (it becomes active object)
delete it (no more active object)

Then, when you create grease pencil stroke, it is not linked to an active object and it is created in choosen layer.

Maybe blender needs an option "No more active" for deselect all.

In any case, there is no bug here. :)
