Particle hair does not work correctly with multiresolution mesh #41040

System Information
Fedora Linux 20

Blender Version
Broken: 2.69, 2.71

Several aspects of particle hairs do not work correctly with a multiresolution mesh:

  • New hairs (without editing turned on) do not face normal to mesh faces
  • Particle Add brush does not place new particles under cursor as expected

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error
(Steps 1-3 are already done in the attached .blend)

  • Create a multiresolution mesh.
  • Edit with sculpt tools. Make sure the displacement from the base mesh is significant.
  • Add hair particle system. Note that some of the hairs in the more displaced sections of the mesh are not aligned with the normals.
  • Go into particle edit mode and add new hairs. Note that the new hairs often appear away from the cursor.

Assigning to you, Lukas, but I smell yet another 'current design limit'?

No. Problem is the same with subdivision surface modifier.
It should work.
Or it means work with animated characters with subdivision applied in viewport.
It worked in 2.70a.

Particle edit mode is terminally broken, putting this on todo.
