Modifier solidify doesn't produces the correct mesh! see the attached solidify_problem.blend file.

Assigning to Campbell (might take some time though, he’s off-duty currently), but pretty sure there is no bug here really, non-manifold meshes are always tricky to handle in such kind of operations…

What your proposing is an entirely different solidify method, thats fine but really out of scope for existing modifier. (also it would be significantly slower and more complex).

You can't use Python for modifiers, but you can use Python to write mesh tools (using the BMesh api)
