With the wiki we have a real mix of different conventions, eventually we should move to some standard convention.

It should:

  • Sort usefully.
  • Be descriptive.

Proposal:

  • Flat file-structure (all images in images dir, easy to quickly thumbnail and browse)
  • lowercase, underscore separators.
  • order naming with specific identifiers at the end.

$chapter_$subsection_$id.jpg

eg:

  • render_cycles_lighting_example1.jpg
  • interface_intro_splash.jpg
  • interface_ui_panel.jpg

Picture format - do you prefer jpg format for picture saving? I'm not graph. engineer but I think that PNG formaf of picture is probably better - loseless compression. And "clear background" without noise especially in technical pictures (menus, monolithic color areas and so on)

Likely we will keep original lossless versions of images elsewhere. (we have PNG's from wiki stored)

For now with git and a new system, its easier to use JPG for smaller repo.

It seems like you've got the convention set - is there anything else to do, or is it good to start editing links and images to follow suit, and maybe put this in the style guide? it's a lot of work (2k+ renames and at least as many link fixes all across the manual) to make the images folder more browseable and the hover text pretty. better late than never i guess :T
