Active Vertex Group does not get Transferred #42185

System Information
W7 SP1

Blender Version
Broken:2.72

There's an option included for transferring weight maps from an object to another, under the "Group" dropdown menu, to enable the user to transfer the "Active" group from the source object. That doesn't work.

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error

1- Create a source and destination mesh objects.
2- Create more than one vertex group on some or all of the vertices on the source object and select only one vertex group, in order to make it the active group.
3- Shift select the destination.
4- Enter weight paint mode and invoke the Transfer Weights command.
5- Select the "Active Group" from the Group menu.
6- Nothing is transferred... Only every vertex group gets transferred, and it's a real hassle having to clean up 10s of vertex groups one by one every time...

mont29, trust me, you really do not need one here in this instance. All you need to do is follow the instructions, very very easily reproducible every time, never fails... You can go ahead and transfer weights from a simple UV sphere to a cube, it's reproducible :)

Ok... If a scene file is absolutely necessary, then here it is:

1- Open the attached "WEIGHT_TRANSFER.blend" file ()
WEIGHT_TRANSFER.blend
2- There are vertex groups on the "SPHERE" object and you're gonna want to transfer only one of its three weight groups to the "COAT" object, so select the "SPHERE" object, go to the Vertex Groups list and select one of the Vertex groups to make it the active Vertex group.
3- Shift Select the "COAT" object and enter weight paint mode.
4- Invoke the Transfer Weights command.
5- Select the "Active Group" from the Group menu.
6- Nothing is transferred... Only the "ALL" works...

Ok, so in the end, this is not a bug. In fact, 'transfer weight' has a bit of a strange behavior, using active object as destination and all other selected objects as sources. One consequence is that it’s the destination object that has to have an active vgroup in this case, which will then get values from same-named vgroup of source object (note you get an error message in header about active object having no active vgroup…).

Thanks for the report, but not strictly a bug. Anyway, I’m currently working on a 'transfer data' mesh tool that aims to replace all those specific transfer weights/UVs/etc ones, hopefully being more powerful and consistent.

Such a tool would be awesome Bastien, thanx for your time and info... In Softimage, I was (and still am) an avid user of GATOR, where you're able to raycast transfer UV's, weights and even shapes from one object to the other and it saved my life a couple of times...

Cheers;

AJ
