Crashes on saving .exr files with cycles GPU rendering. #42312

System Information
Mac Pro 3,1, OS X 10.9.5, 2 x 2.8GHz, 16GB, GeForce GTX 660 3072 MB

Blender Version
Broken: 2.71, 2.72, 2.72a

Short description of error

Rendering cycles GPU crashes intermittently as it saves animation frame to disk. Sometimes renders a few frames then crashes, mostly just does one. Seems OK on CPU. I've been using half-float, zip, rgba.

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error

  1. Unzip my directory tree (Sorry for the file structure, but this file is crashing all the time, and I wanted to preserve links etc for you to test)
    1a. Open "EXRcrash/Production/scenes/Scene01_DesertCity/01-15_Silhouette/01-15_SilhouetteLensFlareWFtest.blend"
  2. Check it's still on GPU compute
  3. Ctrl-F12 to render
  4. Maybe wait for 4 or 5 frames, as file is saved to disk, crash.

I'm hoping this isn't my hardware dying. It's only reporting about 300MB memory usage during rendering for me.

Thanks for your help.

Hi, cant reproduce crash with 2.72 or 2.72a on:

Opensuse 13.1/64
Intel i5 3770K
GTX 760 4 GB (Display)
GTX 560Ti 1.28 GB 448 Cores
Driver 343.19

Stop render after 16 frames.

Cheers, mib

Couple of questions:

  • Does it only happen with GPU rendering?
  • Does it happen with other file formats?
  • Does it happen if you'll render in a fullscreen mode or locked interface?
Couple of questions: - Does it only happen with GPU rendering? - Does it happen with other file formats? - Does it happen if you'll render in a fullscreen mode or locked interface?

I did some more testing on 2.72a:

• I had thought it was GPU rendering only but I did get a similar crash on CPU as well
• tried some other formats and got crashes on all but TIF (EXR full, RadianceHDR, Cineon, even Png though it got through more frames) I stopped the TIF render after about 6 frames, thought I suppose it might had the same problem if I'd waited longer.
• fullscreen didn't seem to help
locked interface seemed to stop the crash, at least with GPU, EXR half float.

The crash is always at the same moment, immediately after the frame is saved to disk.

I don't know why a 16GB/3GB machine would have memory issues with a scene like this. Could it be related to the large landscape with a procedural noise texture? I have no clue, just scratching my head.

Let me know what you think anyway.

Cheers.

@StephenHamacek can you please confirm it still happens to you with latest builds from our buildbot?
