Win8.1 64bit | GTX680

Blender Version
Broken: 2.72.2 5604a3d

Short description of error
When using Join tool (shortcut J) in the attached case, Blender can easily crash or just become slow.

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error
Open attached file, switch to Edit mode of either objects in the scene, then Press J.

Can confirm that it becomes quite slow (didn't have a crash here). This might come from the weird mesh architecture you've created :D. You could try to flip some normals, this helped here.
Anyway, I'm not sure this is a real bug. Would you mind checking this @ideasman42?
