Short description of error
This is a UI and UX problem.
1 texture has too many names at different location.
It gets really confusing when project gets larger.
Exact steps for others to reproduce the error
The texpaint slot should get the same name as mat tex slot.
Only the file name should be different.

Totally agree that this is horrible from a UX point of view, but it's nothing we allow in our bug tracker.
The textures like "Texture" and "Diffuse Color" are material textures, the other ones are image/data textures and we need to find a way that communicates this better. The first thing that comes to my mind is using tabs for the toggle buttons on the top of the Material Slot list. They could then display the names so that they are more descriptive ("World Textures", "Material Textures", "Data Textures"). Noted on my personal todo.
Anyway, as I said, UI/UX uglyness ins't considered as a bug -> closed.
Ahh, OK then. I have to copy-paste the names of my over 2000 textures manually. :'(
Or you create a python script ;)
(also just in case you don't know, you can copy & paste values in Blender by using mouse hover, no need to click - often forgotten trick, but saves some time)
I wish it can automagically give the texture a good name, but the name is all over. Sometimes the correct one in the texpaint slot, sometimes in the file name and most times the texture slot. I hate myself for noticing the UX problem after >2k textures were painted.
