Texture Paint Brushes not kept when opening older files #43667

System Information
Linux Mint, GTX 660ti

Blender Version
2.73a

Short description of error
Texture Paint brushes not available in older files
Exact steps for others to reproduce the error
Open new file and create a copy of a brush, give it a new unique name and save start up file. Open an older file made in previous version of Blender, and then look for the brush that was saved in the start up file - and if I am correct, you will only find brushes available from the version the file was created in. I have 2.73a, but when opening files built with 2.6x, I am missing even the Fill brush, and anything I have saved in my start up file.

If this is desired behaviour for not keeping the brushes from the start up, then maybe we need a way to append a group or set of brushes along with the associated preview images.

Thanks for reading this :D

I agree that brushes should be reloaded as a user preference like theme.

But actually appending brushes from startup.blend is working for me. It is appending custom icon, too.

Are they there when opening older files from pre-2.73? This is the crux of my problem, that they are not available unless I append from a newer file. I have the same problem though with brushes from 2.73a vanilla that should be there, but opening an older file leaves me with just the tools available in the previous version.

Reading your first post may do believe that appending brushes was not working.

I confirm your main problem that newly created brushes are not there when opening older files.
Only brushes present when .blend is saved are present when .blend is opened.

Thanks for the confirmation. I had gotten really happy to use the Fill tool for variating base color on a mesh, but when I opened files from our SVN, the tool wasn't available again. Then I opened older paint files, and still nothing, and this included the custom brushes I had saved to my startup.

For the record, we have decided not to patch old files to include new brushes and unfortunately when you save a blend file it gets saved for the version of blender that opened it - any data from new versions that are not recognized are lost.
So it's recommended to either stick to one version, append objects or create/append the brushes again.
