Enabling Normal influence for image texture in Blender Render crashes Blender #43860

System Information
Windows 8.1, nVidia GT 630m, 720m

Crash log: germ_door.crash.txt
nVidia 630m system: system-info.txt
nVidia 720m system: system_info2.txt

Blender Version
Broken: 2.72, 2.73a
Worked: ?

Short description of error

When viewport shading is set to Material or Texture, enabling 'Normal' influence on an image texture leads to a crash. However, if 'Normal Map' is checked in Image Sampling, crash doesn't happen.

I'm reporting this on behalf of another user. I can verify the described behavior on his machine. However, I wasn't able to reproduce it on my own Linux machine with GTS 450. Can #43804 (viewport bug make blender close) be relevant?
Both system_info files report Windows:32bit, even though the systems are 64bit: http://www.pasteall.org/pic/show.php?id=84696

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error

  1. Switch render engine to Blender Render
  2. Add an object
  3. Switch viewport shading to Texture or Material
  4. Add material to the object
  5. Add an image texture to the material and load an image
  6. In texture's Influence settings, check 'Normal'

Can you try a build from builder.blender.org and see if the issue still persists in the latest builds?

Oh, yes, I'm sorry, I forgot to mention that, we did, and it persists. I should also say that I noticed that on the 630m machine system-info actually reports an Intel GPU (perhaps an unrelated Optimus driver issue?). At first I thought that might be related, but then again, another machine reports nVidia GPU correctly, but still crashes.

Yes, this is an optimus issue. You need to set optimus to use NVIDIA always or set blender as an application using the NVIDIA device in optimus settings.

I can't reproduce the issue here. Does this happen with factory settings as well?

Can you try running blender with "blender -d" from a command line and post here any messages you might get?

You can redirect the output of blender to a file named errors.txt in the same directort as the blender executable by running it with "blender -d > errors.txt" from the command line.

Yes, it happens with factory settings too.
Here's the blender -d output, although I don't see any screams of pain in it: log.txt
To reiterate: we just load the blend, select the texture, tick "Normal", and it crashes. We've investigated with several files and various images, and crash is inconsistent: some files work fine, while others crash.

Here's one of the offending files with one of the offending images packed: http://www.pasteall.org/blend/34814
I've only packed a normal map to reduce file size. With this particular image Blender doesn't crash IF 'Normal Map' is enabled in Image Sampling. However, it does if it isn't, as does a grayscale bump map.

Can't recreate here. Could you place this dll into the folder containing the blender.exe and tell us if it works? It will be slow but shows us wether this is a driver issue or not.
