FBX Export of a selected Mesh fails if mesh is not in the first layer. #44623

System Information
OSX Yosemite: 10.10.3
NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M 1024 MB

Blender Version
Broken:2.74

Short description of error

So, I've been struggling with the FBX exporter for a while. I would get an empty 4kb file on export some of the time and not others, until I finally discovered the one variable that causes the empty file export.

If a mesh is not on the first layer when exporting a selected FBX it will save as a 4kb empty file with no mesh data, or anything for that matter. I've tested it in 2.73 and 2.74 and get the same results.

Cannot confirm that here, note that your object must be visible in 3DViewport to be exported (otherwise, it is not actually selected).

Please always attach a .blend file to help reproducing issues…

FBX_layer_export.blend

Included a blend file. There is a Monkey on layer one which is green and one on layer 2 which is red. If the red monkey is selected and exported as an FBX with selected object selected the file comes out as a 3-4bk empty file. When exporting the green monkey on frame 1 I get a proper FBX file.

The file is called "FBX_layer_export"

Hope this helps

Hi, I've also included the 2 export files, each is labeled to show which layer they were exported from. Probably should have included those as well.

Thanks for all the hard work.

You have disabled sync between 3DView layers and scene (global) ones… you scene ones (Layer panel of scene buttons) only have first and 15th layers enabled, so objects on second layer are not seen.

Thanks for the report, but no bug here.

Just had this problem in 2.76. So i simply moved all meshes to the first layer and things worked again.
