Hey @cobe571, afaik this isn't really an issue on blenders side, windows has to be configured to know which program and which version to use.

However, leaving open for now to get @MartijnBerger's feedback on this as there were some changes made to the windows installer.

Is there not the possibility that an installer cannot update registry?

NSIS installer was running blender.exe -r in order to make needed changes in the registry. Not sure if same functionality was ported to .msi installer.

Meanwhile you can invoke that command manually from the terminal as a temp workaround.

same problem with msi...
I used yours instead of creating one and I found out that file association is not done. Would be great if it was done or at least to have an option to do it with a property or something using orca.

Thanks for the msi version by the way !

I noticed the new installer give us a .msi instead the .exe... For what I remember the "old installer" at the begin of setup installation gave us the possibility to associate .blend files with blender.exe - Just re-add this functionality at the begin of installation, also re-add the possibility to choice to keep our personal addons and configuration files in the installation folder. Same way re-add the blend-preview into the file-manager, that's really useful. I know everything will be resolved really soon. I'm sure of that. Thanks again devs for this new awesome release.

I had the same problem (Blender 2.75 MSI install, Windows 7 64bit).
I used "blender -r" command (run a command prompt, navigate into the application folder and give this command)
It shows that registry was successfully updated, but still nothing happens. You should manually set in the explorer, that blender is the default application to open .blend files with (right click on a blend file, run with, choose application) Before "blender -r" blender doesn't show up as an option and which was worse I couldn't associate blender.exe from the program files folder either.

blender -r might need to be run with admin privileges.
Not sure if same functionality was ported to .msi installer. Ill add the option back.
