wrong FBX import with skeleton #45476

System Information
Two systems:

  • Linux Manjaro (GTX765)
  • Windows 7 (GTX970)

Blender Version
2.75a official release

Short description of error
If I export the standard skeletal Mesh from Unreal as fbx and import it in Blender the Bone rotation is messed up! If I import the same fbx file in e.g. Maya, it works just fine.

The funny thing is, that when I export this messed up file back to Unreal (fbx with standard settings of the blender fbx exporter) everything works just fine in Unreal. The problem is that I want to use the standard unreal skeleton in Blender for rigging a new character. But it's impossible to rig a character with this messed up rig. If I rotate the bones manually it will mess up things in Unreal...

I tried to change the primary bone axis when importing, but it's never as it shoud be... always messed up.

Importing a MakeHuman fbx works just fine. So maybe the bug isn't blenders fault.

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error
To reproduce, just import this .fbx file which I exported straight out of Unreal Engine 4.81: SK_Mannequin.FBX

You want to ignore leaf bones and enable automatic orientation. Please try import options before making reports, they are not here because I find fun to add them.

Having the exact same problem on latest blender, played with the import options, especialy the ones you mentioned for several hours now. it just wont import correctly. Here is the FBX file i cannot manage to import correctly in blender. Works flawless in cinema 4d.
