Viewer node highly increases render time #45560

System Information
Win7 64-bit, nvidia GTX 750ti

Blender Version
Broken: 2.75a
Worked: (optional)

Short description of error
When rendering in the compositor, the rendering-time doubles when using a viewer-node.

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error
In the image I show an exemplary compositor-node-setup. I used many mix-nodes to get a longer render-time, so you can see the effect better.
On the upper half, the viewer-node is not connected and when rendering (F12) it will finish in 1:27 seconds. On the lower image, the viewer-node is connected, which results in the render-bar passing through two times and a doubled render-time.

A notable fact is, that when using other nodes (e.g. glare-nodes), the render-time will be only a little bit longer, but they do not seem to be calculated twice.

Can confirm that here. Assiging to Sergey to get his input.

I tested several other versions of blender:

In 2.61(.0 r42615) the problem does not seem to be existent, but I noticed, that if you re-render the image, without altering the node-setup, the rendering will be generally quicker. Also noteworthy is, that the rendering will only take about 1/10 the time, compared to blender 2.75 (or 2.70, 2.69 ...)

Blender 2.64(.0 r51026) shows the described problem just like blender 2.75, but the rendertimes are also much shorter for the same node-setup (01.15s in 2.64 and 09.62s in 2.75).

All following versions that I tested (2.67, 2.68a, 2.69 and 2.70) also take longer to render, when the viewer-node is connected.

What I find interesting is, that the jump in rendertime happens between 2.68a and 2.69 (1.5 seconds in 2.68a vs. 8 seconds in 2.69).

2.64 was the version which included new compositor system which didn't really turn out to be perfect from avoiding full re-compo for viewer node. Improving this situation is in TODO and not really considered a bug now. So please stay tuned for further updates!

P.S. Do you mind sharing file which renders in 1.5sec in 2.68a and 8sec in 2.69?

Hello,

it was a setup similar to the one on the screenshot. Everything else is on default-settings.

Here another one, with render-times for 2.68a and 2.70:
