Deleting a branch is permanent. Although the deleted branch may continue to exist for a short time before it actually gets removed, it CANNOT be undone in most cases. Continue?
The enclosed file nodes-skin-plus-subsurf-BI-crash.blend has a material called “Skin” defined using nodes, with its colour varied using two different vertex-colour layers, rendered with the BI renderer. The mesh also has a subsurf modifier on it. Beginning with commit
c61e4f2
, the vertex colours no longer have an effect on the rendered material, unless the subsurf modifier is turned off. Beginning with commit 2ec00e, attempting to render will cause Blender to crash, unless the subsurf modifier is turned off.Let me know if you need more info.

Can confirm the crash with current master (@Psy-Fi may be interested too).

Cannot reproduce anymore with current master, so assuming this has been fixed already - we can always reopen otherwise…

It may not be crashing any more (thanks for fixing that), but it is still not quite right.
Here is a render of the sample
.blend
file with the older version of Blender, and here is a render with the current version. Note the blush on the cheeks: the latter is not correctly using both the vertex paint layers in the node-based skin material.Changed status from 'Open' to: 'Archived'
Both vertex color layers are still being used, if you paint more extreme colors on each, they are visible.
This report is showing a subtle change caused by #45737, which is a fix for vertex colors using the wrong color space.\
Edit, this file did expose a crash when previewing the material.
Fixed.
