System Information
Archlinux

Blender Version
Broken: Buildbot 9355446

Short description of error

Smoke cache behaves oddly when scene start frame is > than smoke cache start frame

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error

  1. Open smoke_cache_positive_start.blend
  2. Start the animation (Alt+A) and let the animation run a few frames (note the frame you stop on)
  3. Stop the animation and toggle in and out of edit mode to clear the cached smoke
  4. Jump to the start frame and start the animation again (Alt+A); smoke will not start simulating until the animation reaches the frame you stopped it at before.

This is a bit tricky setup combined with auto-caching happening in the smoke. Basically, simulation could only happen from the beginning of the time and after loading the file frame 50 is considered good enough for physics start time. But after toggling edit mode modifier will expect time to be re-set to zero before it can properly re-initialize solvers.

Not sure how tricky it is to solve the issue without separating physics time and scene times, someone will need to have a closer look here.

This is somewhat tricky to fix and would consider it a TODO related on blender2.8 branch, where some more major reconsideration about the way how depsgraph fits together with simulation are planned.

Thanks for the report anyway!
