Crash on Graphics Driver issue, macOS with Intel HD Graphics 515 GPU #49064

opened 2016-08-10 08:08:40 +02:00 by Jenna · 13 comments

System Information
macOS 10.11.6 (current stable release), Intel HD Graphics 515 1536mb, on Apple 2016 USB-C Macbook
Blender Version
Broken: 2.77a abf6f08

Short description of error
Blender freezes up frequently, freezing the entire macOS UI except for the mouse cursor, which continues moving normally. Sometimes the freezes resolve themselves after ten seconds or so, and sometimes Blender abruptly crashes when the freeze resolves. Freezes happen when manipulating objects in the 3D view. I'll add any more details I come across, but so far it seems to affect everything I'm working on (simple objects with subdivision modifiers on). Often the freeze never resolves and I have to power cycle the computer to get it back up and running.

Crashlog: blender-macOS-HD515-crash.txt

Blender is effectively unusable on this device, though it was very stable and usable on the previous 2015 USB-C Macbook which had older Intel HD 5300 graphics.

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error
Still trying to figure that out, but very difficult with computer needing so much power cycling. Inclined to wait for a more complete full disk backup before trying to test further.

Yuck… This totally looks like driver bug, maybe waiting for an update of drivers for this (brand new?) platform may solve the issue.

Also worth testing, if you can, does other OpenGL applications work OK on the platform? Does latest build from our buildbot work? Does older blender releases work?

I'll try some more builds in a few hours when my system backup is finished. If that provides no clues, I may try the macOS public beta and see if the next major OS release has improved drivers.

MakerBot Desktop, Meshmixer, and Sketchfab (via safari webgl) are running smoothly, but they're all relatively simple opengl apps compared to Blender.

Testing on blender-2.77.0-git20160810.c19d527-x86_64 it seems the freezes/crashes/system lockups are caused when I try to select something in the 3D view with a right click. It can be a vertex in edit mode, or an object in object mode. One click can freeze up the recent buildbot version for 5-10 seconds, and I think what was happening before is I would click some more times thinking my click had failed, and it was queueing up more long running tasks, locking up the process till eventually the system kills it?

I've tried changing the Selection setting in the System section of the preferences window from the default Automatic to OpenGL Occlusion Queries and OpenGL Select restarting blender after each setting change, but switching it between the three options doesn't seem to change the behaviour.

I've also tested the 2.72b OSX release and it has the same freeze up behaviour. I tried to test 2.65 x64 too, but that wouldn't even launch in macOS 10.11.6.

Not really sure how to compare it to other apps but like, dumping a bunch of objects on the platform in MakerBot Desktop and then selecting them with mouse clicks a bunch of times never caused a freeze, which is presumably a similar sort of operation. I also tried to do click selections of objects in Meshmixer and it remained perfectly responsive.

That’s definitively OpenGL driver issue then… Odd though, so far that kind of issues was always fixed with one mode or the other. :(

We need OpenGL/OSX devs here. Summoning @brecht or @MikeErwin maybe? ;)

And don’t think other apps’ selection process is really comparable, you have many different ways to do it (switching to raytraced selection is actually more or less in our TODO list too…).

Confirmed issue is still present in macOS Sierra 10.12 Beta (16A269f). I'll try and report it to Apple also.

The crash report doesn't offer many details. Only that some command leads GPUSupport (an Apple library called internally by the drivers) to peace out. Problem could be in the Intel client driver or Blender's misuse of OpenGL. We have not seen this problem on other drivers, so that driver is suspect.

Apple writes their own Intel drivers so they'll be able to examine what exactly is going wrong. @Bluebie did you file a bug with them too?

As @mont29 says we'll be redoing our selection code anyway. Still want to fix this bug sooner since it's catastrophic.

I'm going to the local university tomorrow. If they have a 2016 MacBook available I'll try to crash it!

Archiving since this is different code in 2.8, and we no longer officially support this macOS version and GPU.
