Vertex Weight Edit modifier - Texture Mask appears to be broken #50376

Short description of error
When using the Vertex Weight Edit modifier, assigning a Texture Mask should assign weights based on texture channel data. It appears to not work anymore. I don't have access to old builds to see where it might have failed.

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error
Create a mesh
Assign vertex weight edit modifier
Pick a texture mask
Adjust weight options.
See no influence in weight paint mode.

Hm, no issues here (see #50376.blend), the modifier seems to do its thing based on the texture data.

However, I believe the modifier is not intended to purely assign weights, its purpose is to edit existing weights according to mapping function.
Not very familiar with these modifiers to be honest and never entirely grasped the concept of the mapping functions in a single vertexgroup but if your purpose is to assign weights, you could use Vertex Weight Mix modifier with two groups (one with all weight zero, one with all weights one)?

If I misunderstand please provide more info and a .blend file...
