Short description of error
When the strength of an emission shader plugged into the volume output is 0.0 or black, the object becomes solid black.
In versions up to 2.74 it became transparent (which is the expected behaviour since it fades out with darker colors or lower strength).

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error

  • Open attached .blend:
  • Render or change viewport to rendered: solid black cube
  • Change strength in emission shader to 0.01 to get a near-transparent result.
