Short description of error
Normal right-click to select objects does not work in 3D view.
It does work for nodes and the scene browser.

in the preferences menu go to system and try a different selection method see if that improves things.
Will do, just FYI it worked fine until I got a computer upgrade, I think I used to have and older version of OSX.
Ok, kind of figured it out. I had to change the OSX settings to have a "secondary click" (right click option)
However, I'm quite confident, I did not have to do this on my old version of OSX.
Perhaps Apple changed something with the latest update, or I'm a doofus, but I'm pretty sure something changed.
Secondary click is ctrl+click by default on Mac, and this doesn't work in Blender either.

I wouldn't surprise me if the macOS setting got lost in a system update, that kind of thing has happened to me before.
Ctrl+click is used for various other purposes in Blender, so indeed does not work as right click. It might be good to support the default macOS configuration better at some point, and maybe we'll switch to left click select in Blender 2.8 avoiding the issue. For now would not consider there to be a bug in Blender here.
