System Information
Win7 AMD HD 78xx
Blender Version
Broken: 2.79
Worked: 2.74
Works with 2.74 but broken in 2.79.
Short description of error
When not supplying a dedicated cage mesh to the Cycles Baker, normals won't be averaged for the cage. Instead the selected mesh will be used, including hard edges or custom split normals when averaged normals are required.
Exact steps for others to reproduce the error
Try to bake a cube with smoothed corners (bevel + subsurf) onto a simple cube with hard edges using 2.79 Cycles. The bake will not look correct as the hard normals of the cage produce overlapping effects.
The desired behaviour would be that before the baking process starts, the cage mesh has its normals averaged. Otherwise a custom cage has to be created which is unnecessarily time consuming.

Thanks for the report. Can you attach a .blend to reproduce the problem, where we can press Bake and see the different result in Blender 2.74 and 2.79?

More than a week passed without a reply.
Due to the tracker policy, archiving until the required additional information / data is provided.
Here you go mate, just click bake and see the wrong result: T53150_Bake_Cage_Bug.blend
@brecht Oh I forgot to send submit on the file :X

Thanks, the bake result certainly looks very different than 2.74, will investigate.

As far as I could see the order was inverted taking the normals of the selected mesh and sending it to the active mesh texture.
Before it seemed to be the opposite, normal of the active as seen in the selected.
I don't think it was a regression.
