Unable to do Japanese input for text objects #54138

System Information
I myself use Windows 10, with Core i5-4210H, nvidia GTX950M. However, I think this is a shared issue among other Japanese users and possibly other east asian users.

Blender Version
Blender 2.79aRC

Short description of error
I would like to make a text object in japanese. However, direct input is not supported for Japanese. I haven't tried it in other east asian langs but I believe the same happens.

Related : https://developer.blender.org/T30473 (This is about Japanese input for text fields)

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error
Add a text object and try to input Japanese.

I can confirm this. It doesn't work in the text editor or python console either.

Also noticed that typing Japanese for object names or whatever only works if the UI is in Japanese so you can't have an english UI Blender and type Japanese which seems like a weird limitation.

I also cannot input Japanese in the text and console. All of them seems peculiar because we can PASTE Japanese.

As for the typing object names in Japanese, this works for me even with Default(English) UI. Pardon me if I miss understood you.

Also not working correctly on Linux (kkc / ibus). I can enter Japanese text into the text editor and object name boxes, but not in the python console or edit text objects.

After playing with this for a while I'm not sure things are broken, at least for Linux. It feels like something had changed which is why I thought this might have been broken, things could definitely be in proved in this area.

Some things to try:

  • Make sure "international fonts" is enabled in the system settings.
  • Make sure your mouse is hovering over the area where you are entering text before hitting enter to commit the text.
  • Make sure your text object is using a font with Japanese characters.

On Windows it's super broken. You can only copy paste text into text objects. When pressing spacebar after typing a bunch of characters instead of activating IME you actually input spaces into the text field which isn't how Japanese IME on Windows works. When you type the first character it's not input at all, the rest of the characters are input as if you're typing in English. Kanji conversion doesn't work at all.

The unfortunate but simple answer to this is: It's not supported on Windows. When I reviewed (well, more like continued coding) the patch for IME support on Windows, cases like console and text objects were way too broken. Hence, we decided to not add these changes. You should still be able to input Japanese characters using the redo-panel though: blender_font_object.png

More work on this would definitely be welcome!
