Cleanup overlay settings #55863

Currently even though there are many overlay options,
some overlays can only be disabled by turning off the top-level overlay option.

eg:

  • Wire from empties/cameras/lights.
  • edit mode data (mesh cage, edit armature.. etc).

This is a little strange:

  • If you wanted to disable one of these overlays but not another, you can't.
  • From a user perspective there are 'hidden' settings you can't access.

Further, the categories of overlay settings could be organized more logically.

  • 3D view helpers: (manipulator, text, origins).
  • Geometry helpers: wire, edit-mesh length, face area, normals etc.
  • Replacement content: face orientation, weights.

This means for if you want to "see everything" - there are some options you have to be sure not to enable because they replace default drawing.

I think we could group options so alternate drawing methods could be separated from toggles that control hiding.

We could replace shading toggles with an enum since they're mutually exclusive.

We have added more overlays for Grease Pencil in greasepencil-object branch. We tried to keep the same logic used in other blender areas.

I hope we have the merge done before starting this task.

Perhaps the "Mesh Edit Mode" category could be named more generic like "Object Data" or just "Edit Mode" to be more broad and eventually encompass more settings.

I'm thinking about other potential overlays like bezier curve data as Curve Handles or Normals.

Not sure if this is still planned but noticed there is both per material color and per object in the properties window, however under the shading popover there is no per object color mode, only material and random.

@DuarteRamos - for now keeping Mesh/Curve/Armature Edit Mode

I don't have a strong opinion on this, just keeping it this way for consistency.

We can rename panels any time, closing this task since the main points we wanted to resolve have been addressed.
