My recent .blend files disappeared #56031

System Information
64-bit operating system, x64-based processor, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060, 3 GB GDDR5

Blender Version
Blender 2.79

Short description of error
I enter into the blender programme and the general pop up appears with a man and a blowdryer. Underneath, there's an icon with the word 'recent' and I saw all my recent models beneath. I click on one of the files beneath the 'recent' icon and it tells me "Report: Error. Cannot read file (With my file location): No such file or directory". I then tried to browse for the file and it was gone. I didn't see it at all. I tried looking for it in other folders and in other areas of my drives to see if it was there but it wasn't. I've never touched its placement in my documents from when I first saved it - I just let it sat. Now, I can't get it back and all my hard work and effort is gone to waste. It's litterally nowhere to be seen. It happened again with some of my other .blend files when I went through the same process. Clicked - Error - Disappeared off the PC.

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error

  1. Enter into the application (blender)
  2. A pop up appears on your screen
  3. A subtitle called 'Recent' should be on there, bottom right of the pop up.
  4. Go to whatever .blend file you want to go to, thats beneath the subtitle, (i.e. - BRZ.blend or Car.Blend)
  5. Click on it, and an error should pop up with the location of your file and the words 'Cannot read file'
  6. You should then realise that the .blend file is no longer there as an option and no longer there as a general file in your hard drive

Please get back ASAP,

Dylan.H

It's unfortunate that these files got lost, but there is not enough information here for us to investigate or even know that it is Blender that caused this problem. Blender just stores the locations of where it last opened the files.

We need exact steps that make the .blend file disappear, if it is a bug in Blender it must be related to some specific conditions on your computer. Maybe the files got moved to another folder, maybe they are stored on OneDrive or Dropbox and there was a synchronization issues, possibly hard driver corruption, ...
