subsurf and mirror modifiers in edit mode and random shading not works

Short description of error
in solid view, the subsurf and mirror modifiers, in edit mode, only work in material shading mode, in other modes they do not work and sometimes emerges garbage of geometry going from one shading mode to another

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error

the problem remains with the latest build ... but I do not think it's something complex to solve

In Edit mode there are indeed weird inconsistent drawing…

@Clément Foucault (fclem) assigning to you since it looks like drawing glitches at first glance, but could also be an issue in mesh evaluation, then maybe more for @Sergey Sharybin (sergey), or maybe @Campbell Barton (campbellbarton)

Could not reproduce any bugs anymore in latest builds. Note that the mirror modifier is set to mirror on both X and Y which creates overlapping faces and artifacts, however that is not a bug.
