the difference between this two functions (2.8 vs 2.79) is that EXTEND is missing
so it can't extend
I changed >add by nothing so by default middle mouse button is used to substract and no need for 2 entries.
3D View Tool: Object, select box
2.79 select border

I can't understand this sentence, can you rephrase it more clearly?

And please use the bug reporting template:

I shouldn't speak about this but I was comparing with border select in 2.79 to find a solution.

I will try to be clear: the problem is that I can't select several objects, in object mode, or add more selection using the select box. for instance a scene with 2 cubes a lamp and a camera. I can't select the second cube and the camera...

select box avec add en option
clic on the cross button
it becomes grey

print screen explanation: so now if you want to deselect (as in 2.79) you do it whith the middle button at the end. and only 1 key is needed. but this is not the problem
and extend option neither...I tried to uncheck it in 2.79 on select border and I can add more selection doing huger selections. extend is just for separated selections (non recovering)

Extend on corresponds to "Add", Extend off corresponds to "New". There are simply more options now. The X button is to reset to the default value, which is Add. It's not a checkbox.
