Switch to UV Editing.
See what the plane UV.
Any way to enable Unwrap (menu or U key )
See how the new UV was generated.

The generated UV does not fall into the texture field.

You can get the UVs to be in the 0-1 range if you have the Keep UV and edit mode mesh selection in sync option ON.
