At the bottom of the main window are small icons describing various options the user can employ while in the current mode. For example - in the 3D Viewport a small mouse icon with the left button highlighted and the words 'Set 3D Cursor' means click the left mouse button to set the cursor position to that of the mouse. (These help icons are a nice feature by the way.)

When in the 3D Viewport and the input preference is set to 'right select', the help icons at the bottom of the screen depict the correct functionality. However, when the input preference is changed to 'left select', the help icons do not change based on the new functionality. They remain the same and several of them now depict functionality that no longer exists. Examples - the 'Set 3D Cursor' icon is still present but clicking the left mouse button does not reposition the cursor, the 'Move' icon (hold and drag the right mouse button) no longer moves an object rather it brings up a context menu.

Recommendation - Correct the icons so that they show the correct functionality based upon the input preference. Also, return the move functionality to the right mouse button even when 'left select' is in effect. With 'right select' enabled objects may only be moved if the user actually clicks on them before dragging the mouse. Clicking in an empty area has no effect. This can be applied to 'left select' as well so that right clicking on an object allows it to be moved while right clicking in an empty are will display a context menu. (I really like moving and dragging objects via the right mouse button. Without this function I’ll probably never shift to ‘left select.)

I cannot reproduce this. Here it does the right thing, reflecting the correct input for left or right select.

Unless you can provide some useful info on this, I will mark this as invalid. It seems to work correct.

I can see a refresh issue when the mouse is over the 3D viewport, and then opening the preferences in a new window and changing the default. In that case the main window status bar does not immediately refresh. Is that the issue this is referring to? Once you start using Blender and pressing some keys it then refreshes.

Only popping up the context menu when clicking in an empty area would not work, it's less efficient and in more complex scenes there may be no empty space at all. You can use the Select tool for quick transforming of vertices with LMB.
