Short description of error
In [Object Mode], active mesh/nurbs/curve/metaball object is solid orange (default color) and open space in viewport is white, overlaying the grid & relationship lines.

Active mesh (only) object is invisible (or behind white overlay?) in wireframe shading

When disabling [Outline Selected] in [Overlay], viewport is normal.

Could you try newer mesa versions? The one in 18.04 is quite old and there has been a lot of fixes for rendering bugs in newer versions.

You could also try newer blender beta versions. The one you tried is quite old now.

If updating mesa and blender version does not work. We'll continue from there.
