Short description of error
When exporting to 3ds. I don't know if the issue really lies in Blender, but I am using a small program that was included with a game to convert 3ds to a foreign game mesh format specifically for that particular game. The thing is though that this game requires smoothing groups.
In Wings 3D, smoothing groups can be exported along with the mesh, although in Blender, this is not possible.
Exact steps for others to reproduce the error
You would need this specific program to make the conversion from *.3ds to that game format, then that program gives an error during the conversion, due to the smoothing groups that are missing in the *.3ds file.
The game is Battlefield 1942, and the format is *.sm (simple mesh) and the program is called 3dsToSm.exe. I've attached the program in this post.
The steps are like below:
*Export that *.blend file as a *.3ds file, then open the 3dsToSm.exe application and convert the *.3ds to an .sm file, and there is the error.
If this smoothing groups problem could be solved I would be able to make models for this game, and that would be hugely helpful to not needing to get Wings 3D as a step in between Blender and the game, slowing the conversion process.
*NOTE: The .blend file contents "col01" and "lod01" must be named this way, otherwise the "3dsToSm.exe" application won't recognise them.
Kind regards,
Skull Kid

Our 3ds export does not currently support smoothing groups, and future development will likely concentrate on more modern and standard file formats.
