System Information
Operating system: MacOS 10.14.3
Graphics card: Radeon Pro 575

Blender Version
Broken: blender-2.80.0-git20190306.3fc7d51ed3d3-x86_64

(example: 2.79b release)
(example: 2.80, edbf15d3c044, blender2.8, 2018-11-28, as found on the splash screen)
Worked: (optional)

Short description of error

When I import a rigify rigged character from 2.79b, all the shapes are gone. The only way to retrieve the shapes is to go through the rig, bone by bone, in the outliner and turn on wireframe in the Bone tab->Viewport Display.

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error
Based on the default startup or an attached .blend file (as simple as possible).

In blender 2.79b, add metarig. Then Generate a rig. Save out file. Read file into blender 2.80. No shapes

I have noticed the same error and was not aware of this workaround. I found that changing the armature to stick rather than shapes results in a usable rig that can at least be worked with and it's much faster than changing single bones because it works on armature level. Still, it is an annoying bug for me as well.

This should be handled by blender itself onload. All armatures using shapes are affected. it's not an add-on related bug.

@NeilRichmond you should probably change the tags or create a new task if you want this to be solved quickly.

Thank you for the fix!
Please excuse the ignorant question: when will this be in the beta build?
