Short description of error
While rendering in a separate window, you can go back to main window, open preferences and boom, preferences are opened in the render window. You can see the progress bar on windows taskbar still going on, everything is being computed, but you are not going to get the full image. You can open the Rendering tab and see your render as 'finished' even though it's still computing. After it finishes - it does not update the image. It's in the state from the moment of opening settings.

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error

  1. Click F11 to open rendering window
  2. Start rendering
  3. Minimize/switch windows to the main blender window
  4. Open preferences from the menu
  5. No profit, see desciption.

Sebastian Parborg (zeddb) triaged this task as Needs Information from User priority.

I'm guessing we are talking about cycles renders (the default eevee cube finishes too fast on my end).

I can't reproduce the missing result. If I open preferences the F11 window changes as you noted. However if I switch back the main window and hit F11 the window turns back and I do not get any missing updates.
I would even finish the render with the preference window and switch to see the finished result.

Is this still an issue for you with the latest blender beta build?

@Sebastian Parborg (zeddb) Right, one more step - close the preferences menu.
As you can see - progress bar is still there.

Sebastian Parborg (zeddb) raised the priority of this task from Needs Information from User to Confirmed, Medium.
