Blender Version
Broken: (2.8, downloaded April 26 from https://www.blender.org/2-8/, 513b71c89ad0
Worked: 2.79, stable version and former versions

Short description of error
I doubleclick blender.exe, it opens okay and when I go to the material tab of the initial cube of the default startup - Blender disappears


How can I run --debug-gpu in the terminal if this could be the solution as mentioned in
T55787 ?

This sounds like an issue that was solved recently. Could you try the latest build and see if it is solved for you?

I downloaded blender-2.80-a372e5e426e4-win64 today and Blender still crashes when I click on the material tab of the initial cube of the default startup. The address is different now.

You can run it with the debug gpu flags by running the blender_debug_gpu.cmd file.

Have you tried installing the latest graphics drivers from the Intel website? I don't think 10.18.10.3355 is the latest version.

I updated the graphics driver from https://downloadcenter.intel.com/ and 2.8 still crashes the same way.

Some update from my side:
I downloaded 2.8 yesterday (May 19th)and did some tests.

  1. Starting from Sculpting menu I can click the materials button without crashing. The crash happens when I try to change something in the right-hand menu.
  2. Starting from General Menu the crash still happens when I click on the materials button

Another crash scenario is shown in the figure below. In sculpting menu I can render when I set the render engine to cycles, I can render 50% of the time when I set render engine to workbench and I never can render with Eevee.

Marking as high priority since there are many reports about this, even though we haven't reproduced it ourselves yet.

From the bug reports, at least these Intel drivers versions are problematic. They are old drivers from 2014.

And indeed I can reproduce a crash (and other display issues) with my own Intel HD 4600 and 10.18.10.3412 drivers.

However recent drivers from the Intel website work fine for me:
10.18.14.5057 (15.36.35)

So my questions for users with this crash are:

  • Is there a specific reason you are still using old drivers?
  • Can you try downloading drivers from the Intel website and installing them?
  • If it fails or refuses to install, can you show a screenshots of the error it gives?
  • If installing worked and it still crashes, can you attach the system_info.txt?

I cannot install the driver 10.18.14.5057 (15.36.35) since the installer says "This operating system is not supported." The Intel page says the Acer TMP255-M has a proprietary graphics driver and Acer says it is an Intel driver. I contacted Acer support.

Have you tried switching to cycles and see if it does the same thing?

  • I can switch to cycles and render the cube
  • When I switch back to Eevee and click render it crashes again
  • When I switch back to Eevee and click on a property within the materials tab it crashes also

So from what I can tell, the cause of the problems here is old drivers on Windows 7/8 that the laptop manufacturer prevents to be upgraded.

We can't officially support such old drivers, we don't have the resources to debug and work around these issues. Upgrading to Windows 10 may work around the problem, other than that I don't think we can do much here.
